Three new virtual reality (VR) training modules have been added to Short Line Training Center’s online learning management system (LMS).
The modules cover freight car familiarization, locomotive routine inspections and Class I air brake testing and inspection. According to a press release from the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA), these are the first uses of VR in LMS.
The Short Line Training Center is a joint project between ASLRRA and the Iowa Northern Railroad Company (IANR) and is funded through a federal Integrated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvement Program grant.
Using VR technology for technical training offers benefits including increased engagement and motivation, improved safety and efficiency, and greater accessibility and scalability, center officials said in a news release.
“The release of these three courses is a major win for the program and the industry. The financial access that short-line railroads have to this cutting-edge training is groundbreaking for trainees and railroads,” said Mark Vaughn, IANR’s vice president and chief operating officer for transportation, training and safety and partner in developing and managing the center.
