What will dog shows look like in 25 years? Or 50 years? About 20 years ago, I was writing for Dog World magazine, and when I asked the reporters what they thought the future would look like, almost everyone was optimistic. Shows will be bigger and of course easier to travel. Dogs will be scanned in and out of the ring with scanners, and the whole process will be automated. Dog magazines will still exist, but their online editions will have MTV-style video ads for dogs instead of still images. There will be some online judging with videos, but old-fashioned shows will also be popular. Dog clubs will be bigger, but they will also offer services to organize shows. They may include a panel of judges randomly selected by computer. All kinds of dog sports will be available in one place, in beautiful centralized venues owned by the AKC or a federation of local clubs.
All it was missing was flying cars, five-minute workdays, robot maids, floating houses, and Astro. In case you don’t remember, The Jetsons was set in the “future” of 2023.
As I said, this survey was conducted about 20 years ago, so if we want this to happen, we should have acted sooner. So I asked people the same question again. The results were no longer optimistic. In fact, the most common answer was “dog shows will disappear.” Respondents gave a variety of reasons.
