The Netflix app for Quest is currently unavailable from the store and no longer works.
This VR app features a cozy cabin environment and was partially developed for the Samsung Gear VR by John Carmack in 2015. It was ported to Oculus Go and then to the original Oculus Quest, but hasn’t been updated since. Because it was developed so long ago, the resolution was limited to 480p and there was no support for downloads or passthrough.
Today’s discontinuation comes just a month after the Quest’s web browser gained support for Netflix, officially replacing its VR app.
If you have the VR app installed, you can launch it, but when you try to watch something, you get a playback error.
Quest’s web browser now supports Netflix
You can now watch Netflix through the web browser on your Quest headset, streaming in up to 1080p.
In a web browser, Netflix can stream at up to 1080p, can be used in a pass-through or virtual home environment, and supports multitasking.
But what the Quest still lacks, unless you sideload Android apps, is a way to download content for offline viewing on a plane, train, or in a hotel with slow Wi-Fi. Mind you, Netflix is also only available via the web on the Apple Vision Pro, although other platforms have apps for Apple’s headset that support downloads, including Disney+, Prime Video, and Apple TV+.
