Space has always captured our curiosity and imagination, but it is becoming increasingly intertwined with our daily lives, driving innovation and improving productivity in nearly every sector.
When we think of space, most people think of space travel and rocket launches. However, highly sophisticated space technology (space tech) is exploding business opportunities here on Earth, and we believe we have only scratched the surface of the potential.
When it comes to space, we believe collaboration is essential. That’s why we’ve been bringing together key players across the space ecosystem to analyze the opportunities in space technology and its applications for business. Over the past few years, we’ve been helping our clients unlock the secrets of space, pairing with exciting space tech startups and helping them launch proofs of concept. Read on to find out more…
“SpaceTech is not just for the benefit of the space sector, it provides innovation opportunities for non-space organisations too.”
Molly Martin, Startup Ecosystem Specialist, Deloitte
Big Business in Space
Last year, we worked with Sifted to produce their first ever space tech report: Space Tech: Big Business in Space on Earth, which reveals the growing momentum of investment in the space sector, identifies the “big bets” in space tech across Europe and profiles the start-ups that are leading the way. Crucially, it also highlights the role of space in different industries.
Currently, most space technology revolves around communications, navigation and observation. Tomorrow’s frontiers will be space-based manufacturing, R&D, tourism and renewable energy.
The report shows the breadth of space tech start-ups already active in Europe. Some are building rockets, others satellites, and many are leveraging data to provide insights to businesses and end users. But it’s clear that no one company can do it alone: collaboration is key. Future predictions for space technology
To further the conversation, we invited leading experts across the space ecosystem, from major investors to promising startups, to share their thoughts, insights and predictions about the role space technology will play for non-space organizations (from banks to pharmaceutical companies) now and in the future.
Watch the film “Earth 2040: Predictions for the future of spacetech” to see what this means for the coming decades. Only have a minute? Watch the trailer here.
An out-of-this-world opportunity
In our space tech accelerator alone, we’ve seen solutions helping organizations use satellite data to verify the value of carbon credits, enable near-instant insurance payouts, monitor infrastructure and physical assets at scale, and even track marine mammals from space…
Through satellite data and AI, we’re working with Whale and Dolphin Conservation and SPACEWHALE to track whales from space – pioneering new technology for wider marine conservation, and a pilot project with Bardsley England and Treeconomy looked at how space technology and data can be used to measure carbon stocks in orchards to help tackle climate change.
“Deloitte is a great catalyst. It helps us find partners and brings people together. And I think that really adds value to what we’re trying to do in terms of environmental protection.”
Chris Butler-Stroud, CEO of WDC
Collaboration across the space ecosystem
Clearly, space technology is not just for the benefit of the space sector, and offers innovation opportunities for non-space organisations as well, but we believe collaboration across the space ecosystem is key to leveraging the value of space technology.
Staying up to date on new technology trends and capabilities can be a challenge. At Deloitte, we bring together and connect the various players in the space ecosystem. We know that this collaboration and a vibrant space ecosystem is more important than ever.
