InSpacePropulsion Technologies (ISPTech), a spin-off from the German Aerospace Center (DLR), has raised €2 million in pre-seed funding.
ISPTech is developing a propulsion system based on non-toxic, so-called “green” propellants that significantly reduce the overall cost, make it readily available and simplify spacecraft operations. The propulsion system offers superior performance compared to current green propulsion market standards and can be adapted for any spacecraft, from small CubeSats to large satellites, capsules and landers.
Current space propulsion systems are expensive, complex and run on highly toxic propellants that require significant labor to handle, complicating and slowing the propulsion system development and qualification process, while increasing overall costs. Additionally, alternative solutions currently on the market lack performance or are not easy to operate.
ISPTech was founded in 2023. The team has developed two technologies, one that is space-compatible (HyNOx) and one that offers unique advantages (HIP_11). HyNOx runs on ethane and nitrous oxide. Unlike competitors, ISPTech’s system allows for continuous operation at high performance without overheating issues.

HIP_11 is a unique propulsion technology for large spacecraft such as landers, capsules and satellites, with less complexity and cost than other systems of similar thrust levels, refuelability and the ability to perform hybrid operation using simultaneous electric and chemical propulsion.
In 2023, the company hopes to land its first customer, win a paying spaceflight, and certify its first thrusters for space.
“ISPTech is excited to join forces with ISPTech to bring innovative solutions to the world of healthcare,” ISPTech founders Felix Lauck and Dr. Lukas Werling said in a joint statement.
“We have spent many years researching propulsion technology, testing current competitors’ products and working with many future customers.
“Throughout this history, we have seen a huge market demand for affordable, readily available and robust propulsion technology. Our mission is to answer this demand.”
The round was led by HTGF and supported by co-investment from First Momentum Ventures and Possible Ventures.
Dr Koen Geurts, Investment Manager at HTGF said:
“The growth of the satellite market over the next decade and the increasing need for space debris avoidance maneuvers will drive a surge in demand for chemical propulsion systems, especially non-toxic solutions, democratizing access to space.”
ISPTech is the only start-up offering solutions with TRLs from less than 1N to high 1kN and is well positioned to set new market standards.”
The investment will ensure ISPTech’s propulsion technology is ready for its first customers and spaceflights.
The first propulsion system is scheduled to be demonstrated in space in 2025.
