Berlin Transport now has seamless 4G/LTE mobile coverage across its entire subway system, revolutionizing connectivity for daily commuters and visitors.
In a major development for Berlin’s subway system, passengers can now enjoy seamless connectivity underground thanks to a powerful 4G/LTE mobile network spanning the entire Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) network. A joint effort between BVG and O2 Telefónica, the initiative ensures high-speed internet access for all subway passengers, regardless of their mobile provider.
“Having good mobile phone reception in the subway and being able to access the Internet and send e-mails are part of a modern metropolis for Berliners and visitors to Berlin. We want to be the number one innovation location in Europe and with the future-oriented expansion of mobile communications underground we are paving the way towards this goal,” said Franziska Giffey, Berlin’s Senator for Economic Affairs, Energy and Enterprise and Chair of BVG’s Supervisory Board.
Previously, network technology was spread across various locations underground, hindering efficiency. Now, with the establishment of a central “BTS hotel” above ground, base stations can be quickly accessed and updated, laying the foundations for the future implementation of 5G.

“Smartphones are our constant companions. Whether for personal chats or work emails, we all want to be online and stay fast, even when we’re on the subway. That’s why a comprehensive, high-speed mobile network is an important step towards offering even more attractive, modern mobility services. At the same time, a strong 4G network lays the foundation for us to offer free Wi-Fi in subway cars in the future,” says Henrik Falck, CEO of BVG.
Though the implementation of the mobile connectivity was successful, completing the project presented myriad challenges, from navigating the complexities of Berlin’s historic tunnel system to meeting strict safety and environmental regulations. Despite these obstacles, including pandemic-related delays, the network expansion means Berliners and visitors can now enjoy connectivity underground in the city.
Increased connectivity has seen Berliners embrace the subway’s evolution into the digital age, with even more advancements to come.
