As I write this, I feel a sense of accomplishment. Thanks to advances in generative AI, I have found a new voice as a writer and overcome the severe challenges posed by my cognitive impairments in organizing words on a page. But because there is still uncertainty about whether AI-generated works can be copyrighted, I have had to take steps to protect my intellectual property that most authors don’t. My story should inspire those interested in the intersection of AI and copyright law to think about what principles they would like to see supported in the law.I’m 60 years old…
introduction Advances in next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies are creating new opportunities for omics data analysis, unlocking valuable insights that benefit precision medicine, clinical diagnostics, and drug discovery. To keep up with this high-throughput technology and accommodate fluctuating data volumes, Healthcare and Life Sciences (HCLS) customers are looking for a secure, reliable, and scalable environment for data storage and analysis. However, they often have limited in-house expertise and resources to set up this infrastructure and run analyses, creating obstacles to large-scale omics data analysis and collaborative research. To address this challenge, AWS launched AWS HealthOmics, a purpose-built service that helps customers…
April 29, 2024 — Amid the challenges the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility faced in assembling and launching Frontier, the world’s first exascale-class (more than 1 quadrillion calculations per second) supercomputer, one critical component worked without a hitch. Critical to the functioning of Frontier is the ability to store the vast amounts of data it generates in its file system, Orion. But even more important to the computational scientists running simulations on Frontier is the ability to quickly write and read from Orion, and to effectively analyze all that data. This is where the Adaptable IO…
WASHINGTON — NASA is seeking public input on how to prioritize about 200 space technology topics to improve how it invests its limited funds. NASA has released a list of 187 “technology shortages,” or topics where current technology requires further development to meet the agency’s future needs. The shortages span 20 areas, from space transportation and life support to power and thermal management. NASA is asking people to review the technologies on its website and rate their importance through May 13, so the agency can use that feedback to prioritize future tech investments to fill gaps. It’s part of an…
Audio of this conversation is available via your favorite podcast service.Last week President Joe Biden signed into law a measure that would force the Chinese firm ByteDance to divest its ownership of TikTok, or risk the app being banned in the US. The measure also included restrictions on the sale of personal data to foreign entities. What are the implications of these moves for US and global tech policy going forward? What will the inevitable legal challenges look like?To learn more, I spoke with Anupam Chander, law professor at Georgetown and a visiting scholar at the Institute for Rebooting Social…
Gordian’s osteoarthritis (OA) program has screened hundreds of treatments in horses with naturally developing OA and advanced dozens of treatments into human ex vivo validation studies. Results from these ex vivo studies matched screen predictions with 80% accuracy, with several hits progressing into additional testing and optimization. Gordian presented these findings last week at the Osteoarthritis Research Society (OARSI) International Conference. In an early development proof-of-concept study, Gordian introduced a pooled library of 50 gene therapies into a mouse model of metabolically associated steatohepatitis (MASH). The therapies were evaluated using the company’s proprietary in vivo screening platform and successfully replicated…
Mercedes-Benz to sell Level 3 autonomous vehicles in the U.S., Photo credit: Mercedes-Benz Date: April 26, 2024. Mercedes-Benz will sell Level 3 autonomous vehicles in the U.S. This achievement follows the company receiving the necessary permits to sell cars with advanced self-driving capabilities in California and Nevada. Level 3 vehicles include the 2024 EQS sedan and S-Class model vehicles, which went on sale in December. They are equipped with Mercedes’ Drive Pilot self-driving software. The technology allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel and eyes on the road under certain conditions. However, the system is currently limited to…
By 2030, 6G is expected to be commercially available, revolutionizing connectivity with lightning-fast speeds, unprecedented bandwidths, and ultra-low latencies. It will transform various sectors, including telecommunications, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and entertainment. In this article, get a glimpse of the 6G world coming to us over the next decade, and explore the 6G research initiatives that are enabling these next-generation capabilities. What are the anticipated use cases and applications driving 6G research? In its International Mobile Telecommunications 2030 (IMT-2030) initiative, the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has laid out its vision for the sixth generation of wireless communications (6G) that will be available commercially…
We’ve all experienced that feeling: you turn on your console, the sound and heat make you feel like you’re about to fly away. What if you’ve been playing a game for months, and you’re almost at the next level, only to have the graphics go haywire and throw you off your rhythm? Frustrating, right? In some cases, it might be worth checking your internet speed and trying turning your console on and off the old fashioned way, but in other cases, these glitches and crashes could be a sign that you need to upgrade – and while it might cost…
