Yesterday, the European Commission published its latest executive decision on the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The announcement was made at the European Competition Network Digital Markets Law Conference, which discussed the challenges and opportunities of the new law, with a particular focus on opportunities to make industry and digital markets more competitive. In its preliminary investigation, the Commission found that Apple’s App Store rules violate the requirements of the DMA because app developers are not free to inform consumers of alternative channels for offers and content. In addition, the Commission has opened a new non-compliance investigation into Apple with respect to…
1 Introduction and MotivationTopological data analysis (tda) is a recent field that emerged from various works in applied (algebraic) topology and computational geometry during the first decade of the century. Although one can trace back geometric approaches to data analysis quite far into the past, tda really started as a field with the pioneering works of Edelsbrunner et al. (2002) and Zomorodian and Carlsson (2005) in persistent homology and was popularized in a landmark article in 2009 Carlsson (2009). tda is mainly motivated by the idea that topology and geometry provide a powerful approach to infer robust qualitative, and sometimes…

The initiative aims to provide a free and open platform for imparting space technology training to students and engineers. At the recently concluded Kenya Space Expo and Conference 2024 in Nairobi, STAR.VISION announced that it has signed collaboration agreements with Zambia’s…
Space tech includes the tools, equipment and systems used to explore and develop space, the data from satellites that improve life on Earth, and how to operate and maintain these technologies. Space technology has flourished as a key growth industry in recent years, with 2021 seeing a peak in venture capital funding for space tech startups in Europe and around the world, according to data from Dealroom. This growth is driven by an innate human desire to explore and exploit vast resources beyond the boundaries of our planet, the need for advanced technology to support communications, hardware and software innovations…
The Cornell University-led New York Consortium for Space Innovation and Development (NYCST) announced that more than $300,000 has been allocated to support six projects in the first round of the consortium’s funding program. The projects were selected at NYCST’s inaugural Space Innovation Symposium, held June 14 on campus. Funded by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Local Defense Community Collaboration Office through the Defense Manufacturing Community Assistance Program, NYCST seeks to address the needs of advanced defense and space technology manufacturing and supply chain capabilities by facilitating collaboration among New York State universities, research institutes, industry experts and government agencies. NYCST-supported…

Since its appearance in the 1960s and its progression with the rise of microcomputing, video games have regularly benefited from advances in the digital world. While cloud game streaming technology is reshuffling the cards of the gaming app industry and 5G promises to accelerate its democratization, let’s take a closer look at its contributions in terms of convergence, uses, and economic models. How does cloud technology in gaming work?Cloud is foraying in the gaming industry, allowing the user to stream high-end games on portable devices, such as laptops, tablets, and mobiles, with fast network connectivity. Thus eliminating the need for regular…
AI is a threat to the 2024 elections — but not in the way you might think, writes Eileen Solaiman, international policy director at Hugging Faith.Already months into the world’s most crucial election year, with billions of people across at least 64 countries and the European Union heading to the polls, public concern is centered on a relatively new and rapidly evolving threat: generative AI.There are many reasons to be afraid. Already, we’ve seen AI-generated fake images of former President Donald Trump allegedly being arrested by the New York Police Department, and an AI voice clone of President Joe Biden…
An artificial intelligence (AI) analysis of genetic, neurological, cardiovascular and other data from multiple studies has found three distinct patterns of brain aging and dementia risk outcomes. Researchers recently identified two subgroups with normal and accelerated brain aging. These findings, published in JAMA Psychiatry, suggest a path to better predict who will develop Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, and could lead to more efficient future research into brain aging and dementia. The study was conducted by an international collaborative team that included NIA-funded researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and scientists from the NIA Intramural Research Program. The researchers used…
The second installment of Deloitte’s “xTech Futures” series focuses on biotechnology as one of many “xTech” domains – a fast-paced and transformative technology that may become a prerequisite for future business strategies. Rich with case studies and interviews with biotech pioneers, the report explores the current inflection point in biotechnology access and opportunity and helps organizations identify their role in the biotech economy through three chapters: “People,” “Products,” and “Planet.” Biotechnology is more relevant to a wider range of organizations than it may seem at first glance. The biotech revolution is currently running largely unnoticed, but it is poised to…
