Since 2014, the Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has been hosting the Malaysian Commercialization Year Summit (MCY Summit) every year.
It is designed as a platform to promote and accelerate research innovation and product commercialization in both domestic and international markets.
The eighth annual MCY Summit 2024 will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 12-13 August 2024.
Spotlight on emerging innovations
The first day of the conference will focus on the future of Malaysia’s biotechnology, space technology and hydrogen economy.
Did you know: The hydrogen economy is an umbrella term for the role hydrogen plays alongside low-carbon electricity in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The MCY Summit 2024 will kick off with a panel discussion on “What will Malaysia look like as a global hub for biotech innovation and accessible healthcare?”
ALPS Global Holding’s cell therapy solutions developed through stem cell research demonstrate Malaysia’s biotech potential. These advances are positioning the country as a medical tourism hotspot, attracting both local and international customers.
But to make it happen on a larger scale, regulatory hurdles, funding, and talent development challenges must first be overcome, and the panelists will explore potential solutions.
Panelists included Dr Tham Seng Kong, CEO of ALPS Group, Professor Dato’ Dr A Rahman Jamal, Senior Principal Investigator at the University of the National University of Malaysia’s Institute of Medical Molecular Biology (UMBI), Dr Iffah Izzati Binti Zakaria, Senior Scientist at the Malaysian Genomic and Vaccine Institute (MGVI), and Dr Ami Fazlin Syed Mohamed, Director of the Institute of Medical Research (IMR).
We will discuss the importance of collaborative research and explain the support policies needed for further commercialization.

Next, Ministers from MOSTI and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) will discuss the adoption of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source in Malaysia.
The two ministries will share insights to support the energy transition with data on technology, innovation, policy, finance and investment. This dialogue is crucial as Malaysia aims to reduce carbon emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050. The two ministries will exchange views on the policy framework for the national energy transition and hydrogen economy roadmap.

The MCY Summit 2024 will also explore the country’s engagement in space technology.

Led by the Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA), the government estimates that the space sector could bring in RM10 billion to the economy by 2030.
“The initiative will stimulate the growth of 500 space-related technology start-ups, create around 5,000 jobs and spur innovation in the sector,” MOSTI’s Chan Lee Kang told the New Straits Times.
MYSA will be taking part in the panel discussion alongside Uzma Berhad (an energy solutions provider) and Access Partnership (a technology consulting company).
They stress the importance of a unified policy approach, public-private partnerships and international collaboration, which is essential to propel Malaysia’s space technology ambitions from policy formulation to successful on-orbit missions.
