Nothing recently confirmed the development of its sub-brand CMF’s first smartphone, the Phone(1). The company teased the device on social media, revealing intriguing design elements that set it apart from the main Nothing Phone line.
Teaser images were released earlier this week, initially sparking speculation that it might be a laptop or tablet, but subsequent leaks suggested that the device is a CMF Phone (1) emphasizing customizability with swappable back covers, which was later confirmed by Nothing.

— CMF By Nothing (@cmfbynothing) June 6, 2024The teaser images showcase a unique design with a prominent screw on the back and a knob-like feature on the bottom left corner. The latter, called “Nothing Lock,” could enable unique add-ons and features, but its exact purpose is unclear. It’s speculated that the knob could be used for volume control and other phone functions. The images also highlight different textures and colors on the backplate and knob, hinting at the customizability of the phone (1). This emphasis on personalization is consistent with CMF’s experimental approach in its Nothing brand.
While the full design and specifications of the Phone (1) have yet to be revealed, teasers have generated a lot of interest and anticipation. Previous leaks have suggested a price of around $240, positioning it as a more affordable option compared to the main Nothing Phone series.
In addition to the CMF Phone(1), Nothing CEO Carl Pei recently announced the development of the Nothing Phone 3, scheduled for release in 2025. This will be the company’s first smartphone with AI capabilities and mark a new direction for the brand.
There’s a lot of hype around AI. Some of it is great, some of it is confusing. It’s great to see new companies rethinking the user experience and form factor. But there’s no doubt that the smartphone will remain the dominant consumer AI form factor for the foreseeable future. For over four years now… pic.twitter.com/ERJc7xhwBa

The unique design and focus on customization of the Phone (1), as well as the planned AI capabilities for the Phone 3, demonstrate the company’s commitment to innovation and pushing boundaries in the smartphone market.
As more details about the CMF Phone (1) emerge, it will be interesting to see how it is received by consumers and whether it lives up to the excitement generated by the teasers. With its playful and experimental approach, the Phone (1) has the potential to attract a new demographic of customers and solidify CMF’s position as a distinctive and innovative sub-brand within the Nothing ecosystem.
