An exhibition exploring the history of energy technology in the North East has opened.

Newcastle’s Discovery Museum’s exhibition, “From Steam to Green – The North East’s Energy Revolution”, showcases how innovators and businesses have utilised different energy sources over the past 150 years.

The exhibition focuses on Victoria’s use of fossil fuels and the green energy revolution, highlighting industries such as Nissan in Sunderland, the first company in Europe to mass-produce electric cars.

Organizers said they hope to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists and inventors.

The exhibition will run for two years and will include interactive elements that will be fun for all ages.

Also on display is a large artwork called Timbering Up by South Tyneside artist and former miner Bob Olley.

Visitors can also generate electricity, pass it through water to split it into hydrogen and oxygen, then mix the gases together to create a reaction that sends a hydrogen ball rocketing high into the sky.

There is also a cross-section of an undersea cable on display, as well as permanent exhibits such as a water wheel invented by William Armstrong, a businessman from the northeast of England.

The exhibition is supported by Newcastle University, Faraday Challenge, the Rees Foundation, the Headley Trust, Friends of the Discovery Museum and the Art Fund.

“We hope to inspire the next generation of engineers, scientists and inventors to help make this once-in-a-lifetime transition,” said Professor Colin Herron CBE, from Newcastle University.
