Ubisoft has partnered with Double Jump.Tokyo to “accelerate” the global adoption of its Web3 games, using a brand new platform called Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles to offer a series of NFTs to gamers around the world. However, this is not Ubisoft’s first foray into the world of blockchain-based NFTs: the company unveiled a full-fledged NFT-based platform, Quartz, in late 2021, which quickly fizzled.
Since then, Ubisoft has partnered with Immutable to try again to make something valuable out of NFTs, but nothing concrete has come from that relationship yet, so Ubisoft is hoping its third attempt will be its best yet.
here we go again
In a recent press release, it was revealed that Ubisoft has partnered with Double Jump.Tokyo to integrate Web3 mechanics into Champions Tactics, a new PvP tactical RPG that Ubisoft is developing. After successful integrations with other developers and publishers, Double Jump.Tokyo has partnered with one of the most influential names in the gaming industry, but this isn’t going to go down well with the community at large.
Hironobu Ueno, CEO of Double Jump.Tokyo, said in a statement:
Partnering with Ubisoft marks an important milestone for double jump.tokyo. We are excited to explore the potential of Web3 and digital ownership in games together with Ubisoft. Partnering with a world-renowned industry leader like Ubisoft allows us to continue our unwavering pursuit of delivering great games to our community while accelerating the global adoption of Web3 gaming technology.
Ubisoft announced Champions Tactics last year but has remained relatively quiet about the project until now. In late 2023, the company released 9,999 “Warlord” NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain, making them available to be minted for free and acting as “tickets” for the upcoming release of playable characters, the “Champions.”
With the power of Double Jump.Tokyo’s Oasys Layer 2 HOME Verse blockchain, players will be able to create three champions for free starting July 18. To compete against other players, you’ll need three champions on your team. Each champion you create will have a unique appearance and different abilities.
Will this latest venture be a success for Ubisoft?
