In the dark corridors of the digital world, artificial intelligence (AI) has not only become a tool for progress and innovation, but also a weapon in the hands of the wrongdoers. From cybercriminals to unethical corporations and rogue nations, these predators are using AI to manipulate people, undermine democratic processes, and erode trust in the digital ecosystem. Unfortunately, given the nefarious ways in which AI is being used to manipulate the general public, society seems slow to feel the urgency to recognize and act.
AI: A double-edged sword
As a data-crunching machine, AI has great positive potential. But this very ability also makes it a powerful tool for manipulation. Bad actors are already using AI to engineer sophisticated, targeted strategies to influence individuals and groups, often without their knowledge.
Deepfakes: Undermining faith in reality
Perhaps the most alarming use of AI is the creation of deepfakes, which are hyper-realistic video and audio recordings in which someone appears to say or do something that they do not in reality say or do. Deepfakes pose a significant threat to individuals’ reputations and information integrity. A notable example is the much talked about deepfake of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, created by artists Bill Posters and Daniel Howe in collaboration with advertising firm Canny. In the deepfake, Zuckerberg appears to boast that he controls “stolen” data of billions of people, highlighting the potential for the technology to be misused.

Social Media Manipulation: The Invisible Puppet Master
Unfortunately, bad actors are misusing AI bots and algorithms to manipulate social media platforms. By creating and spreading fake news, bad actors can sway public opinion, polarize communities, and even influence election outcomes. Consider the infamous Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, where AI-powered social media accounts were used to spread disinformation, as a prime example of this threat. As a result, the threat of misinformation has devastating effects on big-ticket items as well as our everyday lives.
Phishing Attacks: AI-Powered Scams
AI is making phishing attacks even more sophisticated. Cybercriminals use AI to analyze vast amounts of personal data to create persuasive, personalized emails and messages designed to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information. Unfortunately, these AI-enabled phishing attacks are becoming increasingly difficult to detect and prevent.
Psychological Manipulation: Exploiting Vulnerabilities
Beyond public platforms, bad actors manipulate individuals on a psychological level through AI tools. By analyzing behaviors, preferences, and vulnerabilities, AI algorithms target individuals with content designed to manipulate their emotions, beliefs, and behaviors. This tactic is of particular concern because it can be used to exploit individuals for a variety of nefarious purposes, from consumer manipulation to radicalization. Moreover, the use of AI for manipulation is not limited to a single organization or region but is a global phenomenon with far-reaching implications. As a result, many people around the world can be tricked into making incorrect decisions and taking harmful actions.
However, this is not exclusive to bad actors. Already, several countries are reportedly using AI for cyber espionage and psychological operations. These state-sponsored efforts use AI to infiltrate secure databases, spread propaganda, and destabilize the political and social environment of other countries. Similarly, in the corporate world, there are suspicions that companies are using AI to manipulate consumer behavior. By analyzing consumer data, companies can target individuals, exploiting their weaknesses and biases, and steer them towards certain products and decisions. Consumers may not even be aware of this subtle influence.

The Dark Web: The Sinister Dark Side of AI
The dark web is where AI is used to power a variety of illicit activities, including drug trafficking, arms sales, and even human trafficking. AI tools help bad actors in these spaces evade detection, optimize their activities, and target vulnerable individuals. At the same time, AI is also deployed to exert psychological influence, with the goal of eroding trust in digital platforms and media, inciting anxiety and paranoia, and causing mental health issues. A constant stream of manipulated content also desensitizes individuals, making it harder for them to distinguish truth from fabrication.
deep Impact
Through these illicit uses, criminals are beginning to undermine public trust. Bad actors using AI to spread disinformation and fake news are causing citizens to lose trust in institutions, the media, and each other. This breakdown in trust has serious implications for society’s ability to function and address collective challenges. For example, elections are at great risk. AI-driven fake news and manipulation of public opinion through social media bots already pose a major threat to the democratic process. This undermines the very foundations of democracy, which is based on free and informed decision-making by citizens.
Designed to resonate with each person’s fears, bad actors create false information and amplify it through an individual’s core news feed. As a result, this misinformation appears more “true” to the person, and bad actors successfully manipulate that person into subconscious decisions and actions. This is targeted psychological manipulation by AI algorithms that violates an individual’s autonomy and freedom of thought. As a result, these bad actors directly attack people through unseen influence and coercion, undermining a person’s ability to make independent decisions.
Call to action
The widespread and sophisticated use of AI for manipulative purposes requires urgent action. Governments, technology companies, and individuals must work together to combat this threat. First, a strong regulatory and legal framework to govern the use of AI is desperately needed. This should include strict guidelines for ethical AI development and deployment, transparency requirements for AI-driven content, and severe penalties for misuse. Second, investment in research and development of technologies to detect and counter AI manipulation is essential. This includes developing AI-driven countermeasures and strengthening cybersecurity defenses. Third, it is essential to raise public awareness about the potential for AI manipulation and educate people on how to identify such threats and protect themselves. Digital literacy should be a key component of education curricula to empower individuals in the digital age. Fourth, the technology sector must prioritize the ethical development of AI. This includes incorporating ethical considerations into the AI design process and ensuring that AI systems are transparent, accountable, and consistent with human values.

It is a harsh reality of the digital age that bad actors can use AI to manipulate people. This poses serious threats to individual autonomy, mental health, public trust, and democratic processes. Addressing this challenge requires a multi-pronged approach that includes regulatory action, technological innovation, public awareness, and ethical AI development. The time to act is now to ensure that AI remains a force for good, and not a tool of manipulation in the hands of bad actors.
