KOCHI: Students of the Rover Club at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) are gearing up to collaborate with a local high school to impart lessons on space technology and rover building to 11th and 12th graders. The initiative is the work of Team Horizon, a rover club from Cusat that recently won a national rover building competition. The team is gearing up to participate in the International Rover Challenge (IRC) to be held in Krakow, Poland, in September this year. Currently, Team Horizon is training over 300 first-year university students on rover building and space technology. They have also held consultations with over five city schools and have received positive feedback on their proposed workshops. “Our club provides training to many first-year students. However, many of us feel that if we had had access to knowledge on rovers during our school days, it would have helped us a lot,” said Romar Josvin, a mechanical engineering student and manager of Team Horizon. The team plans to hold workshops twice a month from August that will focus on the basic concepts of space technology and rover engineering. “We aim to impart foundational knowledge to students and to identify and collaborate with promising young talents for future projects,” added Josvin. Team Horizon is made up of 52 undergraduates (34 men and 18 women) and has achieved remarkable results on the global stage, including placing 11th in the world and 1st in India at the ERC ’24 qualifiers. Team leader Muhammad Siad P said, “We outperformed teams from some of the world’s top universities and are the only team from South India to qualify for the world finals. We look forward to competing in September.”
