TM Lo is president of Samsung’s Mobile Experience (MX) division, so you have to listen when he talks about current and future Samsung smartphones. In an interview with the Australian Financial Review, Lo revealed that the “vast majority” of MX’s research and development (R&D) spending is on AI phones. And these aren’t your average phones with Galaxy AI like the Galaxy S24 series. No, these are completely different phones.
There’s still time to pre-order the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6
Roh said the software that will run on these new phones may already be released with GalaxyAI features such as Live Translation, currently available on the Galaxy S24 series of phones. This feature allows for phone conversations between two people who speak different languages. The call is translated in real time so that each person on the other end hears a language they understand. It’s an AI feature that makes the world smaller and promotes peace and understanding on this planet we all share.
The new smartphone “may be radically different from Samsung’s existing smartphones,” Lo said. He didn’t elaborate on what the “radically different” smartphone will be compared to Samsung’s recent devices, but he said it will be more “mobile.” Some of the current Galaxy flagship models also have nifty AI features, such as FlexWindow with Interpreter translation. This AI-based feature allows two people sitting at a table to have a face-to-face conversation and be fully understood on both sides, thanks to the dual-screen feature of the Galaxy Z Flip 6. S Pen support will be combined with AI in the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 6, allowing users to turn rough sketches made with a digital pen into detailed drawings. But AI can be used for a variety of functions in a variety of products, including phones, tablets, smartwatches, and earphones. Some of the devices Samsung has recently announced with GalaxyAI capabilities include the Galaxy Z Fold 6, Galaxy Z Flip 6, Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Galaxy Buds 3, and the new Galaxy Ring.
Low didn’t say when we might see a new AI phone. Currently, the MX division is investing a lot of R&D money into developing AI phones, but GalaxyAI is being used to bring artificial intelligence to the company’s current lineup. As the head of Samsung’s MX division, Low should know what’s planned, so he piqued our interest in the future AI phones the company is working on.
