Reuters News is seeking an experienced and motivated Cybersecurity Correspondent (Level 1 Journalist) in San Francisco.
The successful candidate will have a track record of breaking news about some of the largest data breaches, ransomware attacks, and the criminal organizations behind them. Hacking was once primarily a concern for computer professionals, but in recent years has emerged as a major national security and law enforcement issue affecting governments, businesses, and consumers around the world. Many nation-states now employ hacking forces for espionage, occasional sabotage, and in some cases, profit. Criminal organizations have caused the spread of ransomware around the world. The cybersecurity crisis is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, as defensive measures lag far behind offensive strategies.
Cybersecurity correspondents report on major hacking incidents to understand how the attacks were perpetrated, who was behind them, what damage was done, whether defenses were adequate, and how victims and others responded. Correspondents also undertake deeper investigations into various aspects of cybersecurity, shedding light on a world that largely operates in the shadows and tracking the evolution of government policy responses. This position will be based in the United States, with a particular focus on developments in the United States, but coverage is global and correspondents frequently engage in reporting outside the region. This position will involve close daily collaboration with cyber team colleagues in Washington and London, as well as frequent collaboration with non-specialist correspondents in bureaus around the world.
Reporting on cybersecurity brings unique challenges due to the highly secretive nature of the field and the shadowy characters involved, but it also offers rewarding work and many opportunities to do the kind of impactful journalism that Reuters’ cyber team has consistently delivered in recent years.
