ORANGE, Calif., July 25, 2024 – Providence Saint Joseph Hospital announced it has successfully performed the world’s first robotic spine surgery using eCential Robotics’ new open spine platform to implant the Spineart medical device.
eCential Robotics, a surgical robotics company that developed the open surgical platform, and Spineart, a leader in spine surgery innovation, are collaborators in a new era of open technology sharing that enables cross-functional use of implantable devices and robotic surgical platforms.
“In our relentless pursuit of innovation and excellence in patient care, we were eager to take advantage of the solutions offered by Spineart and eCential,” said Erick Westbroek*, MD, spine surgeon at Providence Saint Joseph. “The integration of Spineart’s advanced implant system with eCential’s open robotic platform will enable us to perform minimally invasive procedures with greater predictability, reproducibility and improved outcomes.”
Providence Saint Joseph Hospital became the first clinical facility in the world to install the state-of-the-art robot, and a recent procedure marked the first in the United States to use it successfully in conjunction with the Spineart implant.
“St. Joseph’s Hospital has an excellent reputation for world-class surgical care, and patients often travel from great distances to seek treatment and care from our highly skilled spine and orthopedic surgeons using cutting-edge technology,” said Brian Helleland, CEO of Providence St. Joseph’s Hospital and the Orange County/High Desert Region. “These advancements provide an even more sophisticated platform for our surgeons to perform at their best.”
“We are pleased to announce the introduction of this cutting-edge robot at St. Joseph’s Hospital,” said Jerome Trividic, CEO of Spineart. “We believe this advancement will increase surgical precision and improve patient outcomes, greatly benefiting our customers, hospitals, surgeons and patients.”
The surgery performed by St. Joseph’s Hospital for eCential Robotics marks the first application of the company’s integrated robotic technology in a human body and marks the launch of eCential’s operations in the U.S. It also marks the introduction of cutting-edge solutions to meet the evolving needs of surgeons and patients around the world.
“We are pleased to see our technology being adopted in the U.S.,” said Clément Vidal, CEO of eCential Robotics. “There is great interest and momentum in our open solution, as it allows surgeons to choose the best implant system for each patient while at the same time providing economic benefits to hospitals. Our platform has been described as the smartphone of surgical robotics.”
