Sony has revealed that the PSVR 2 Steam app will be released on August 6th, making the PSVR 2 headset compatible with VR games from the PC Store.
In addition to the headset, players will also need a PSVR 2 Sense controller and a PSVR 2 PC adapter, which costs $60. A DisplayPort cable compatible with DisplayPort 1.4 is also required. If you want to use your PSVR 2 to play VR games and apps on Steam, you’ll need to keep the PSVR 2 app installed on your PC after the initial setup is complete.
When using a PSVR 2 headset with Steam, features such as HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback (except vibration) are not available, but 4K visuals, 110 degree field of view, 3D audio, and finger touch detection are supported.
The headset’s PC compatibility is a bright spot in the recent bleak VR news. In March, Sony reportedly paused further production of its PSVR 2 headset due to weak demand. Additionally, First Contact Entertainment, developer of Firewall Zero Hour and Firewall Ultra, closed down last year due to a lack of support in the VR space. Sony also laid off 900 developers earlier this year, which impacted the VR division.
GameSpot’s review of the PSVR 2 stated that “PlayStation’s second VR headset is powerful and elegant, but when it comes to games, Horizon Call of the Mountain does all the heavy lifting.”
