More than six months after its release, the German Netflix series “Dear Child” is enjoying a surprising second wave of success, almost entirely due to strong performance in Latin America, according to an analysis by consultancy Slick Strategy.
The limited series “Dear Child” first made its global debut following the week it began on September 9, 2023. It consistently ranked in the TV Top 10 in various countries for up to seven weeks. Its global popularity is undeniable, as it remained in the Global Top 10 (Non-English TV) for six consecutive weeks until October 15, 2023, garnering a total of 46 million views during this period.
A recent analysis by German consultancy Slick Strategy highlights that between 24 June and 14 July 2024, the series is experiencing a resurgence, particularly in Latin America, and a second wave of international success.
• From June 24-30, 2024, “Dear Child” re-ranked #7 in the Global Top 10 (Non-English TV Shows) and also re-ranked in the TV Top 10 in Peru and Venezuela, demonstrating its continued popularity in those markets.
• From July 1-7, 2024, the show rose to #10 in the Global Top 10 (Non-English TV) and re-entered the Local TV Top 10 in the Latin American countries of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela and Turkey.
• From July 8 to 14, 2024, the German limited series ranked among the top 10 TV shows in Mexico, confirming its strong position in one of Latin America’s largest and most competitive TV markets.
According to the ranking of the top 10 TV shows by country, “Dear Child” had outstanding results. It performed best in Saudi Arabia, followed by Ukraine where it spent 10 weeks in the top 10 – the longest streak of any country. Argentina came in third, and the show’s country of origin, Germany, placed fourth out of the 92 countries where the show appeared in the top 10.
According to the “What Was Watched in the Second Half of 2023” report, the series was the second most successful show in that time period, garnering a total of 53 million views. The limited series currently sits at number 10 on Netflix’s list of most popular TV shows (non-English), garnering 50.9 million views in its first 91 days.
Dear Child is based on the acclaimed novel of the same name by Romy Hausmann. The German version of the original is masterfully written and directed by Isabel Kleefeld and produced by Constantin Television.
