Meta, the tech giant behind the popular Quest VR headset, is reportedly stepping up its efforts in the augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) spaces.
According to a recent report from PatentlyApple, Meta has filed a patent that could replicate some standout features of Apple’s Vision Pro headset, which is slated to debut in June 2023 and go on sale earlier this year.

According to reports, the newly filed patent, titled “Embedded Sensors in Immersive Reality Headset Enabling Social Presence,” suggests that Meta is planning to redesign its existing Quest headset or develop an entirely new model that incorporates this advanced technology. Unlike Apple’s EyeSight feature, Meta’s version would also include health sensors embedded in the facial interface, potentially providing additional benefits to users.
Apple’s EyeSight feature has been praised for being unique, allowing users to stay connected to their surroundings while immersed in a virtual environment. The technology creates a transparency effect when someone approaches the headset wearer, allowing the user to see them while displaying their own eyes. Additionally, EyeSight provides bystanders with visual cues about the user’s focus and activity, enhancing communication and interaction.
While the EyeSight feature may seem like a small addition, it significantly changes the user experience by improving social interaction and connectivity. Meta’s interest in incorporating similar functionality into its AR/VR headsets can be seen as a recognition of the impact of Vision Pro and a desire to offer comparable functionality.
Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously praised the comfort and performance of the Quest 3 compared to the Apple Vision Pro, but this patent filing shows that Meta recognizes the value and potential of Apple’s innovative approach. While details about Meta’s future headset plans are still largely unknown, the development highlights the competitive and rapidly evolving landscape of AR/VR technology.
