gridX’s smart energy management solution combines the Xenon cloud platform with the gridBox IoT gateway. The gridBox redesign was also aimed at significantly accelerating the in-house production of the gateway: the new plastic housing for the gridBox will now be produced by a plastics manufacturer in North Rhine-Westphalia.
By updating the housing and switching to a local supplier, gridX has shortened its supply chain and increased the efficiency of gridBox production. The increased production performance is mainly due to a reduction in the number of small individual parts. With the new housing, the gateway can be assembled much faster thanks to a plug-in system, eliminating the need for complex screw connections between the cover and base.
For gridX, this increased production efficiency is expected to enable a significant increase in annual production volumes, providing a key foundation for the company’s current expansion phase. As a result, gridX’s hardware production will not only become more agile, but the company will take another major step towards the ambitious growth targets set by management.
“The gridBox refresh not only enables gridX to scale,” said Tim Steinmetz, managing director and chief growth officer at gridX, “but it also enables our partners to further expand their business with smart energy management solutions and optimally address the ever-increasing demand from the HEMS and e-mobility sectors.”
In addition to improving production efficiency, sustainability factors also played a key role in the strategic decision to modernize gridBox.
Meanwhile, the manufacturing process for gridBox housings has become much more material-efficient than before: the plastic waste generated during production can be immediately recycled and directly reused.
Additionally, like gridX, the manufacturer places a high value on a sustainable supply chain. In addition to sustainability certifications for the manufacturing process, the supplier also prioritizes resource-efficient processes that minimize waste. Finally, the choice of regional partners also plays a key role: the new supplier’s proximity to gridX’s Aachen production facility means shorter delivery distances for the housings – another positive impact on the carbon footprint of the IoT gateways.
