Following the shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, that left former President Donald Trump injured and killed a spectator and the shooter, billionaire Elon Musk has pledged his full support to former President Donald Trump.
“I fully support President Trump and wish him a speedy recovery,” Musk said in an 11-second video from the Trump campaign’s official livestream, which showed Trump surrounded by Secret Service agents and pumping his fist in the air. In a later post, Musk also shared a photo of Trump pumping his fist in the air.
The day before, Bloomberg News reported that Musk had made a large donation to a political action committee aligned with the Trump campaign. In March, Musk told broadcast journalist Don Lemon that he was “moving away” from Biden but wasn’t sure whether he would endorse him in the race.
“I’ll voice my opinion, but I don’t want to make any significant financial impact,” Musk told Lemon. “I may endorse a candidate at the last minute, but I don’t know yet. I want to make a thoughtful decision before the election. If I decide to endorse a candidate, I’ll be sure to explain my reasons.”
Musk posted in June that X would remain neutral even if he didn’t. “The platform is neutral but I will voice any opinion I want,” he wrote. “That’s what free speech is all about!”
Former President Trump was escorted off the stage by Secret Service after the shooting, which left at least one spectator and the gunman dead. The Associated Press reports that the gunman was shot dead moments later and the incident is being investigated as an assassination attempt. The New York Times reported that the Trump campaign said the former president was “OK.”
“The last time America had a candidate this tough was Theodore Roosevelt,” Musk posted after announcing his endorsement.
