Clear communication is the foundation of effective cybersecurity operations. A successful defense requires the integration of people, process, and technology. According to Tyler Zito, senior solutions architect at Expel, without clearly defined processes and communication, even advanced technology and skilled personnel cannot effectively protect a business.

Zito, an experienced mountain rescuer, noted that what really matters for both first responders and cyber incident responders is timelines: Both jobs require timely detection, response, mitigation, notification and recovery, he said.
“In day-to-day security operations, you need to know who’s in charge, who’s responsible for what, and how you’re going to execute the plan. So build in communication at the beginning, during, and after the planning phase to check in on the status. [the incident]”We need to report and understand what went well and what didn’t go well,” Zito said.
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at ISMG’s Midwest North America Summit, Zito also shared:
Why cultural fit and teamwork are important to building a strong cybersecurity team, how mock scenarios and training can help refine communication skills and improve incident response, and the importance of creating a culture that encourages continuous improvement.
