German family-owned pharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim today announced an important step towards expanding its pipeline of targeted cancer cell therapies and immuno-oncology drugs.
Boehringer said it is adding an innovative preclinical program with its acquisition of Nerio Therapeutics for a total value of $1.3 billion. Boehringer did not disclose the amount of the upfront payment, but said it aims to develop the program as a potential key component of its immuno-oncology portfolio with the goal of improving outcomes for cancer patients.
California-based Nerio’s small molecule inhibits protein tyrosine phosphatases N1 and N2 (PTPN1 and PTPN2), which act as immune checkpoints. Through this mechanism, PTPN1/2 inhibition can activate the immune system to fight cancer cells.
