Songs like “Bad Guy,” “Lunch” and the Sofi Tucker remix of “Copycat” are highlighted in Supernatural’s new boxing workout, while the “Flow” routine features current hits “Birds of a Feather,” “Bellyache” and “Oxytocin.”
Supernatural lets users don a headset and take part in choreographed cardio workouts, and a deal with Universal Music Publishing Group in 2021 opened up a wider selection of songs for in-app programming, including the SN Artist Series, which will launch in 2022.
“When selecting songs for our Artist Series, we prioritize showcasing an artist’s entire catalog, while striking a balance between selecting songs that will appeal to both new listeners and dedicated fans, promoting the artist’s new work, and using songs that best fit the style and application of our movement,” Supernatural senior producer Jess Zobler told Billboard. “For example, Supernatural’s boxing classes use more traditional, fitness-focused music, while the flow style uses visual cues like targets, triangles, and tails to direct choreographed movements that embody the feel and rhythm of the song.”
Launching on Monday, July 22, the routine, which features Eilish’s music, joins Supernatural’s 26 previous Artist Series workouts, which have spotlighted artists like Post Malone, Queen, and Nicki Minaj.
“Billie Eilish’s songbook is sonically very diverse. The chorus of ‘You Should See Me in a Clown’ features a thumping, trap-inspired instrumental that allows for rapid-fire boxing punches and cross-body uppercuts, while ‘Bury a Friend’ features choreographed punches set to an even beat that matches the bass rhythm, making it feel like your punches are in control of the drums and snare,” Zobler adds. “The long bobbing and waving movements, combined with the song’s ominous sonic effects, create the sense of fending off evil monsters lurking under Billie’s mattress.”
“In Flow mode, a song like ‘Bellyache’ with its minimal beats and ethereal textures gives the movement quality a more open and epic feel, using the ‘tail’ target to move the user in sync with the song’s dreamy texture,” Zobler continues.
To coincide with the start of the workouts, Supernatural released two playlists of Eilish songs featured in each routine. Both workouts include songs from Eilish’s third album, “Hit Me Hard and Soft,” which was released in May.
