The seventh playbook in Troy-based Automation Alley’s 2024 Integr8 Roundtable series focuses on big data and the Internet of Things (IoT) and the importance of connecting the two to get the most out of Industry 4.0 technologies.
“In previous roundtables and playbooks, we’ve talked about artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing and digital twins and how these can contribute to Industry 4.0,” said Tom Kelly, executive director and CEO of Automation Alley.
“For these technologies to work well, they need to be part of a connected ecosystem. Big data and the Internet of Things are two sides of cyber-physical connectivity. Big data represents the virtual data pool, while IoT represents the physical means of collecting and connecting systems.”
Data is growing exponentially across industries. In manufacturing, the increased adoption of data is unlocking new opportunities through IoT and Industry 4.0 technologies. Big data alone can uncover hidden patterns and insights that can transform businesses and industries, from predicting consumer behavior to optimizing supply chain logistics.
Connecting big data and IoT creates a data exchange loop, where smart devices collect huge amounts of real-time data and send it to big data analytics platforms for processing, helping manufacturers gain valuable insights and make more informed decisions.
“When it all works together, it feels magical,” Kelly says. “Businesses must invest in these new technologies and carefully transition away from legacy solutions. We know that implementing and sustaining these changes will be difficult, which is why in this playbook we focus on how the industry can get started to drive growth.”
