(MENAFN-AUS) Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, July 23, 2024 – More than 30 students from 21 schools across the UAE participated in the American University of Sharjah’s (AUS) High School Summer Computing Camp, which offered a mix of educational and entertainment activities, introducing young people to the exciting fields of computer science and engineering.
Aimed at inspiring students from grades 10 to 13, the bootcamp involved young participants in a series of experiments and hands-on activities. Led by the AUS Ada Club, the bootcamp began with an introduction to web development, covering the basics of HTML and CSS. By the end of the day, participants had successfully built their own websites.
The survey continued with a focus on cybersecurity, led by the AUS Cybersecurity Institute. Participants took a deep dive into the fundamentals of cybersecurity and ethical hacking, and worked through practical exercises covering various techniques of encryption and cryptography.
On the final day of the bootcamp, the AUS Game Development Club led students into the fascinating world of game design and development. Participants learned the basics of video game creation, from coming up with a game idea to implementing it. By the end of the day, participants had each designed and developed their own video game, showcasing their creativity and technical skills.
“The bootcamp was really useful and I enjoyed every minute of it. The mentors were engaging and were quick to help if we had any issues. The sessions ranged from basic to advanced topics and helped us develop the skills and explore these topics on our own,” said Rabeeah Ahmed, a grade 12 student from Westminster School, Dubai.
Marwa Khattak, a grade 10 student at the International School of Creative Sciences, not only enjoyed the technical skills she learned at the bootcamp, but also meeting students from other schools who were going through the same experience. “It was a great learning experience for a curious person like me. The students who participated were very friendly and interactive, which made learning even more fun,” she said.
The bootcamp was sponsored by Petrofac and hosted by the College of Engineering’s Department of Computer Science and Engineering. All participants who completed the bootcamp were presented with a Certificate of Participation in recognition of their efforts and newly acquired skills.
“The enthusiasm and creativity these young people showed was truly inspiring. Our goal was not only to teach them technical skills but also to ignite a passion for innovation and problem-solving. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of computer science and engineering, preparing them for their academic and professional endeavors if they choose this field in the future. They also gained important transferable skills, such as teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving, which are essential whether they go on to computer science, engineering, or another field,” said Salsabir Shapsaw, a lab instructor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and chair of the boot camp.
