MORAGA, Calif., July 24, 2024 — Atombeam, a provider of innovative technology that redefines how data is used, moved, stored and secured, has announced the technology behind its ability to change how data is transmitted and used. Atombeam’s Data-as-Codewords technology brings new, more efficient and secure data approaches that address the explosion of information associated with transformative computing trends such as edge computing, generative AI and the dramatic growth of the Internet of Things (IoT).
Neurpac is Atombeam’s first Data-as-Codewords product. Neurpac reduces the size of transferred data by an average of 75%, enabling businesses to achieve an average of 4x the effective bandwidth. Latency is reduced to near zero, eliminating the network congestion typically associated with “real-time” data transfers. Atombeam’s technology is protected by 50 issued and granted patents, with an additional 62 pending.
“Enterprises across every industry are facing an explosion in data volumes, with networks and the pipes that connect them quickly reaching their limits, and generative AI and the rapidly expanding Internet of Things demanding greater capacity,” said Charles Yeomans, chairman and CEO of Atombeam. “New, more efficient and secure ways of using, moving, managing and storing data are required. We believe our Data-as-Codewords approach responds to this reality and represents a paradigm shift similar to the ones companies experienced when they adopted breakthrough data innovations such as blockchain, Bluetooth and machine learning.”
Atombeam has officially launched its Reg A+ funding round under broker-dealer StartEngine. The company previously secured $12.5 million through crowdfunding investments.
The company already has multiple contracts with the US Department of Defense and also has partnerships with data giants such as Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Intel, Nvidia and Viasat, and works closely with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.
Data growth exceeds capacity
Machine-generated data is the fastest growing major data category, with IDC predicting that the billions of IoT devices already online will generate 90 zettabytes of data in 2025. This growth is overwhelming existing wireless and satellite networks, hindering businesses’ efforts to make the most of their information assets.
This flood of low-entropy machine-generated data is an ideal initial use case for Data-as-Codewords: Compression techniques are not typically available for small machine-generated message files, but Atombeam can optimize messages from sensors and other devices, which, while small, cause significant network bottlenecks due to their number and frequency.
A completely new approach – Data as codewords with Neurpac
Neurpac’s Data-as-Codewords technology represents an entirely new approach to data. To computers operating at the speed of microseconds, codewords, when organized into “codebooks”, are functionally equivalent to much larger data patterns. The magic of Neurpac is that it creates codebooks and uses them to accelerate and protect data, making that data usable.
The “trainer” uses advanced AI and machine learning to generate a codebook – a set of very small codewords, typically 3-10 bits long, that match much larger patterns found in the data samples, typically 64, 128 or 200 bits long. The codebooks are installed at both ends of the communications link, such as on ships at sea and in data centers, with satellites acting as the network.
When a new message is generated, Neurpac’s encoder uses the codebook to almost instantly replace the message content with a codeword found in the codebook. A codeword is the same information, but much smaller. A decoder at the destination perfectly recovers the original data from the codeword received from the transmission, in near real time. This approach has many advantages:
Increased Bandwidth: Atombeam’s Neurpac increases effective bandwidth by an average of 4x by reducing data size by an average of 75% in near real time. Notably, Neurpac works with files as small as 4 bytes, which is not possible with compression. Neurpac uses very little computing power and can work on virtually any network hardware. Greatly improved security and resiliency: Neurpac enables advanced obfuscation of data, making it extremely secure. The next version will add ultra-light encryption while maintaining Neurpac’s data size reduction capabilities. Neurpac also recovers from connection interruptions almost instantly. Extend battery life: For most IoT devices, transmitting data is the largest power drain. By reducing the amount of data transmitted by 75%, Neurpac significantly reduces on-air time, positively impacting battery life. Searchable data: Unlike compressed data, data converted into codewords by Neurpac is randomly accessible and searchable. This feature has the potential to have a significant impact on analysts by making Neurpac’s compressed data lake as usable as the original data.
“The future of how data is transported, stored, protected and used is here,” said Julien Dersy, chief product officer at Atombeam. “Every transformative computing trend starts with new ideas and new approaches. Atombeam is at the forefront of this innovation, and as we continue to build our technology, we’re discovering new benefits that will drive further transformation.”
Neurpac – Transforming Data Usage
Neurpac has the potential to revolutionize data transfer on edge devices such as compute, routers and gateways. By compressing sensor data, the product increases bandwidth capacity by 4X, enabling more sensors, more frequent data transfers and significantly reduced communication costs. This makes Neurpac ideal for optimizing network efficiency, reducing LTE/5G and satellite costs and transforming any edge computing ecosystem.
Neurpac enables application developers, chip manufacturers, cloud providers and hardware companies to optimize their services, currently offered as a cloud-based platform hosted within a SaaS environment, and in the future with technology embedded into chips and devices.
