In the frame: A still from the Singularity VR game.
Stepping into Zero Latency, Mumbai’s premier freeform virtual reality gaming studio, was like crossing a portal into another dimension. Our team, along with two other enthusiastic participants, were ready to embark on an adventure like no other. One of only three studios of its kind in India, Zero Latency offers an unparalleled VR gaming experience that blends cutting-edge technology with immersive gameplay.
Game: Singularity
We chose “Singularity,” a 30-minute game set on a secret military space station that has mysteriously disappeared. Our mission was to investigate the station, but as the briefing had suggested, there was no sign of humanity, only an eerie silence that hinted at something even more sinister. Armed with state-of-the-art gear, we embarked on an otherworldly, feel-good interstellar thriller.
Briefing and preparation
We arrived at the fitting room and received a 10-15 minute briefing on our gear and how to use it. Our host guided us through the entire process, making sure we were comfortable and prepared for the adventure ahead. We were fitted out with state-of-the-art controllers and reality-blurring VR headsets and stepped into the arena.
Immersion and Gameplay
Stepping into the 360° arena was a surreal experience. My teammates transformed into avatars all around me, adding to the immersion. Despite being in a square room, the virtual environment made me feel like I was truly exploring the depths of space. Untethered play allowed me to move freely and enhanced the realism of the game.
Singularity game is a cooperative shooter for 1-8 players, recommended for ages 13+. As soon as the power goes out, we are thrown into a highly dangerous situation with killer robots attacking from all sides. Gameplay requires quick thinking and teamwork. You only have seconds to strategize, make calls and take orders to ensure everyone’s survival.
As we navigated narrow corridors and rode perilous elevators, we discovered the determination and courage hidden within us. The mission was clear: find the source of the problem and deal with it. The sense of urgency and adrenaline was palpable as we fought against countless squads of robots. The game encouraged us to unleash our inner hero and rely on each other to survive and complete the mission. For us it was a cinematic experience, but in third person view we were just a bunch of people pacing back and forth in a room like in a comedy movie, yelling and asking each other to kill the robots.
Back to reality
Coming out of the virtual world was like waking up from an intense dream. We took a deep breath, shared our experiences, and compared scores. Though I died many times in the game, the thrill and excitement was worth every second. It was exhilarating, especially for a first-time VR gamer like me.
Zero Latency is best played in a group; the cooperative nature of the game fosters teamwork and camaraderie, making for a more memorable experience. From preparation to a victorious finish, your host’s guidance will help even VR newbies get the most out of the game.
The studio offers a variety of games, each offering a unique and thrilling experience, including Far Cry, Outbreak, Undead Arena, Sol Raiders, Engineerium, etc. Each game promises a different adventure, from battling zombies to exploring alien worlds, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy.
