Date: April 26, 2024. Mercedes-Benz will sell Level 3 autonomous vehicles in the U.S. This achievement follows the company receiving the necessary permits to sell cars with advanced self-driving capabilities in California and Nevada.
Level 3 vehicles include the 2024 EQS sedan and S-Class model vehicles, which went on sale in December. They are equipped with Mercedes’ Drive Pilot self-driving software. The technology allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel and eyes on the road under certain conditions. However, the system is currently limited to use at speeds below 40 mph and only operates on certain highways during daylight hours.
Drive Pilot uses a high-precision positioning system that exceeds the accuracy of traditional GPS systems. Once activated, it manages speed and distance, guiding the vehicle within its lane. The system also allows users to use certain dashboard apps that are normally restricted while driving.
Mercedes-Benz’s progress towards Level 3 autonomous driving marks a major step in the evolution of autonomous driving technology. While the vehicle can handle many driving tasks on its own, it is crucial that the driver is ready to take over if the system fails.
This development demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to innovation and sets a new benchmark for other automakers in their pursuit of autonomous driving technology. As the industry moves forward, we can expect to see further advancements and wider adoption of such systems in the coming years. For now, Mercedes-Benz is leading the way in pioneering efforts to bring Level 3 autonomous driving to market.
