Have fun with science at STEAM camps at South Orangetown School of Tappan Zee
Tappan Zee High School hosted South Orangetown School’s Summer STEAM Camp on July 9, 2024 for students learning about science, technology and engineering.
During South Orangetown School’s Summer STEAM Camp at Tappan Zee High School, students learn about science, technology and engineering through hands-on, fun projects.
Coordinator Samantha Levin runs the summer camp for students in grades K-8 in the district.
“We have science classes like air science and acoustics. We have technology and robotics classes. We have automotive and airplane engineering classes, art and mindfulness classes. We want students to experience it all during their time here,” Levine said.
Kindergarten and first grade students recently built kites as part of a lesson learning about the properties of air and how it moves.
“We then toured a cardboard engineering classroom where students were building their own mini golf courses and discussing ball motion, kinetic energy and potential energy,” Levine said.
“Then I watched a robotics class where they were using Spheros to program a robot to navigate a maze,” she said. In another class, sixth through eighth graders were building a pinball machine.
“We get a ton of feedback from students and parents about how much they enjoy camp here. I actually heard a girl in the hallway the other day say she wished the camp would go on forever and that she wanted to come on the weekends,” Levin said. “Overall, I think the students are having a great time.”
